Common signs of failure
A failing clock spring commonly triggers the SRS/airbag warning light, along with fault codes for the driver airbag circuit (open circuit / resistance too high, or similar). Drivers report the horn not working or sounding on its own, steering wheel buttons (audio, phone, cruise control) becoming intermittent or dead, and a grinding or rubbing noise from behind the wheel when turning. On cars where the steering angle sensor is built into the contact reel, the ESP/ABS lights may also appear. The car will still drive, but with an SRS fault the driver airbag may not deploy in a collision, so it should be treated as a priority repair.

Fitment notes
Plug-and-play replacement mounted between the steering column and the steering wheel. Disconnect the battery and wait at least ten minutes before removing the airbag module. The new unit is supplied centred and locked — do not rotate it before fitting, and make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead when it goes on, otherwise the ribbon will snap within a few hundred miles.
